Once hunted for its valuable hide without restrictions, the American alligator was placed on the Endangered Species list in 1967. Luckily, alligators made a comeback and were taken off the list a decade later. Today there is controlled alligator hunting, and the estimated population in Florida is about one million. During the wars, Seminoles often found themselves living off the land and hunting for survival. The meat from an alligator's tail could feed an entire camp, and today you can order alligator tail at restaurants on the Seminole reservation. It tastes like chewy fish.
