Here is a good look at two Everglades habitat zones. The green saw palmetto plants and young pine trees in the foreground are part of a hardwood hammock, a small island of solid ground. Beyond that, yellow sawgrass grows in the wet swamp. The water visible at the right actually extends all the way through the sawgrass. To get to the other pine forest in the far distance, you would have to wade through a few feet of water inhabited by alligators and poisonous water moccasins.
