Ape Cave is a lava tube the size of a subway tunnel. It formed south of the crater about 2000 years ago when the surface of a lava flow cooled and hardened but the molten lava within continued to flow. This random opening to the surface above is the only place on the 1.5 mile Upper Cave trail that isn't completely dark.
