Lava Canyon, USFS Road 83. The 1980 eruption triggered a lahar, or mud flow, that scoured out this canyon floor, revealing the same lava flows that created the Ape Caves 2000 years ago. These vertical columns of hardened basalt formed when the lava cooled. Note the two different forests, the boundary of the 1980 lahar.
